چکیده

. ABSTRACT Manganese (Mn) is postulated to play a role in wood decay caused by certain basidiomycetes. We determined the in vitro response of Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. to Mn and compared differences between three isolates each of the S and the P intersterility groups from the Western United States. On manganese-amended malt agar plates, H. annosum produced a brownish-black pigment that increased with increasing concentration of Mn (1, 5, and 10 mM). The amount of pigment production varied among the isolates, but isolates of the S group clearly produced more pigment than those of the P group. In pigmented areas, hyphae appeared to be packed with black granules, and brownish-black granules/crystals were present in the medium. The black pigment implicates the presence of MnO, potentially resulting from the activity of Mndependent peroxidase (MnP). An assay for MnP did not detect the enzyme in crude culture filtrates of a chemically defmed, nitrogen-limited, buffered medium of the six isolates. The differential response of S and P group isolates to Mn raises questions about a role for this transition metal in H. annosum physiology.

Physiological specialization of Heterobasidion annosum on conifer hosts

HSIANG, T., and EDMONDS, R. L. 1989. Physiological specialization of Heterobasidion annosum on conifer hosts. Can. J. Bot. 67: 2396-2400. Eight conifer hosts belonging to five conifer species were inoculated in vitro with conidial suspensions of eight isolates of Heterobasidion annosum from Washington and Califomia. The conifer trees were represented in inoculation tests by 1 cm diameter branch...

Evolutionary history of the conifer root rot fungus Heterobasidion annosum sensu lato.

We investigated two hypotheses for the origin of the root rot fungus Heterobasidion annosum species complex: (i) that geology has been an important factor for the speciation (ii) that co-evolutionary processes with the hosts drove the divergence of the pathogen species. The H. annosum species complex consists of five species: three occur in Europe, H. annosum s.s., Heterobasidion parviporum and...

Conidia of Heterobasidion annosum from Tsuga heterophylla forests in western Washington

Heterobasidion annosurn produces conidia abundantly in culture; however, since conidiophores are rare in nature, conidia are usually considered to have little or no role in dispersal. Heterokaryotic mycelia of H. annosurn produ...

Comparative analysis of genome sequences of the conifer tree pathogen, Heterobasidion annosum s.s.

The causal agent of root and butt rot of conifer trees, Heterobasidion annosum, is widespread in boreal forests and economically responsible for annual loss of approximately 50 million euros to forest industries in Finland alone and much more at European level. In order to further understand the pathobiology of this fungus at the genome level, a Finnish isolate of H. annosum sensu stricto (isol...

Molecular and Morphological Characterization of Endophytic Heterobasidion araucariae from Roots of Capsicum annuum L. in Korea

A species of Heterobasidion was encountered during a diversity study of endophytic fungi from healthy root tissues of chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in Korea. The fungal species (CNU081069) was identified as Heterobasidion araucariae based on phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer and translation elongation factor gene sequences. Morphological descriptions of the endophytic...
